Trex Composite Deck with Stair Lighting – Northridge Villas, Northville Township MI

Project Overview

This deck project in the Northridge Villas subdivision of Northville Township, Michigan involved replacing an aging deck with a new composite deck designed to improve durability, safety, and outdoor usability. The new elevated deck provides a spacious outdoor living area directly off the home while a long staircase connects the deck to the backyard below.

Titan Decks removed the existing deck structure and constructed a completely new deck using pressure-treated structural framing with joists spaced 12 inches on center to provide enhanced support for composite decking. The finished surface features Trex Enhance® Naturals decking in Coastal Bluff, paired with Trex Signature® aluminum railing for a clean, modern appearance that complements the home and surrounding landscape.

The project also included integrated lighting and landscaping improvements beneath the deck to enhance both safety and visual appeal.

Deck Design and Layout

The design for this project was created to maximize usable space while maintaining comfortable access between the elevated deck and the backyard.

The main deck measures approximately 18 feet wide by 16 feet deep, creating a large outdoor living area just outside the home. A 10-foot by 5-foot landing connects the main deck to the stair system, providing a smooth transition between levels.

A 4-foot wide staircase runs from the landing down to the yard and is designed to maintain comfortable proportions and safe access to the lower yard. The layout allows the deck to function as both an entertaining space and a practical connection to the backyard.

Materials and Construction

This deck was built using durable, low-maintenance materials selected for long-term performance.

These materials provide the appearance of natural wood while minimizing the maintenance typically associated with traditional wood decks.

Deck Lighting

Integrated lighting was installed throughout the stair system and railing posts to improve nighttime visibility and create a warm evening atmosphere.

Wedge Post Lights
Wedge lights were installed on alternating railing posts to provide subtle illumination along the deck perimeter.

Stair Riser Lighting
Two lights were installed on each stair rise to illuminate the staircase and improve safety when accessing the yard after dark.

Together these lighting elements highlight the structure of the deck while enhancing both safety and ambiance.

Integrated stair lighting and modern aluminum railing systems can dramatically improve both safety and appearance. Learn more about our deck railing and lighting options.

Under-Deck Improvements

The area beneath the elevated deck was also improved during the project. Existing landscape timbers were removed and the ground surface was smoothed to create a cleaner and more finished appearance.

A weed barrier and egg rock base were installed beneath the deck to help control vegetation growth and reduce maintenance beneath the structure.

Bi-Level Trex Deck in Greenfield Shores, Brighton – Upper Level

Project Overview

This project was designed as a multi-phase outdoor living transformation for a home in the Greenfield Shores subdivision of Brighton, Michigan. The first phase involved replacing the existing deck with a larger and structurally stronger upper deck that better complements the home and property.

The new upper deck spans nearly the entire width of the home, creating generous space for outdoor seating, gatherings, and everyday enjoyment. The elevated design takes advantage of the natural slope of the yard, offering views of the surrounding wooded landscape that is common throughout many Livingston County properties.

The structure was also engineered to support a second phase of construction that will add additional outdoor living space below.

Project Scope

• Construction of the new upper deck platform
• Installation of pressure-treated structural framing
• Installation of 6×6 structural support posts
• Joists installed at 12 inches on center for enhanced strength and composite decking performance
• Installation of Trex composite decking
• Installation of Trex Signature black aluminum railings

Materials Used

Framing

Pressure-treated structural lumber
6×6 support posts
Joists spaced 12 inches on center

Decking

Trex Enhance Naturals
Color: Honey Grove

Railings

Trex Signature Railings
Color: Black Aluminum

The black aluminum railing system adds a modern architectural look while maintaining open views of the surrounding yard and landscape.

Design Highlights

The deck was designed to create a large, open outdoor living space while preparing the structure for a future lower deck addition.

The upper deck spans approximately 40 feet across the rear of the home, providing a spacious area ideal for entertaining, dining, and relaxing outdoors.

Additional deck sections extend the usable space and create a natural flow across the outdoor living area. The combination of Trex Honey Grove decking and black aluminum railings creates a clean, contemporary appearance that complements the home’s exterior.

The use of tighter joist spacing and strong structural framing ensures a solid feel underfoot while supporting the long-term performance of the composite decking system.

Future Phase

The next phase of this project will introduce a lower deck level, expanding the outdoor living space and adding a hot-tub drop-down area shown in the project plans. When complete, the two-level design will create a versatile outdoor environment ideal for entertaining and everyday use.

Wood Deck Rebuild in Plymouth Township – Plymouth Commons

This featured project in the Plymouth Commons subdivision of Plymouth Township was a complete wood deck rebuild designed to restore structural integrity while elevating the overall aesthetic of the outdoor space.

The original structure had aging framing, worn decking, and a deteriorating lattice roof system. Titan Decks performed a full demolition and rebuilt the space from the ground up using premium cedar materials and a refreshed design that complements the home’s architecture and surrounding landscape.

Scope of Work

Full Demolition

  • Removed existing deck framing

  • Removed old deck surface

  • Removed existing lattice roof structure

Everything was taken down to create a clean foundation for a properly engineered rebuild.

New Structural Framing

  • Installed all new framing

  • Ensured updated structural integrity

  • Built to current code standards

The new framework provides long-term durability and stability.

Cedar Decking & Lattice

  • Installed premium cedar decking

  • Rebuilt the lattice roof system in cedar

  • Restored architectural detail and shade structure

Cedar was selected for its natural beauty, dimensional stability, and timeless warmth. The lattice roof creates filtered light and shadow, adding visual depth and comfort to the space.

Bench Rebuild

  • Reconstructed built-in benches

  • Integrated seamlessly into the new deck layout

The rebuilt seating maintains functionality while matching the new structure perfectly.

Full Project Stain

  • Stained entire deck and lattice structure

  • Enhanced wood grain and color richness

  • Added long-term protection against Michigan weather

The final stain ties everything together and protects the cedar against moisture, UV exposure, and seasonal temperature swings.

The Result

The finished deck is a dramatic transformation — a warm, architecturally detailed cedar outdoor living space that feels intentional, cohesive, and built to last.

The lattice roof system creates a stunning interplay of sunlight and shadow across the deck surface, while the rebuilt benches provide comfortable built-in seating. Surrounded by mature landscaping in Plymouth Commons, the space now feels private, refined, and completely renewed.

Why Wood Still Makes Sense

While many homeowners choose composite, this project demonstrates why premium cedar remains a beautiful option when properly installed and finished:

  • Natural character and warmth

  • Custom architectural detailing

  • Refinishable surface

  • Strong structural performance

When built and maintained correctly, a cedar deck delivers both beauty and longevity.

This featured project takes us to the Deerbrook Subdivision in Novi, MI, where we replaced an aging wood deck with a clean, low-maintenance composite upgrade that perfectly complements the home’s natural setting.

The homeowners’ original deck had weathered years of Michigan’s seasonal changes, showing signs of wear and requiring frequent upkeep. Our team removed the existing deck and built a brand-new structure from the ground up – crafted to deliver long-term strength and modern appeal.

Deck Transformation

This project in the Dearbrook Subdivision of Novi, Michigan highlights the transformation from an aging multi-level wood deck to a clean, low-maintenance composite outdoor living space.

The original deck had been built around several mature backyard trees and had served the home for many years. Over time, exposure to Michigan weather and ongoing maintenance needs made replacement the best long-term solution.

From Aging Wood Deck to Modern Outdoor Living

The new deck provides a more refined look while preserving the natural character of the backyard landscape.
